Autonomous and Resilient Systems

Digital Systems

Autonomous and Resilient Systems Theme of the Digital Systems Research Centre

The bridging of physical and digital worlds has resulted in the design of so-called pervasive, secure and intelligent systems (e.g. smart systems, smart communications and networking, smart buildings, smart manufacturing, smart composite structures). Given the heterogeneity and dynamic nature of the environment and data, their behaviour must be adapted the best possible solutions for end-users and in terms of uses.

Distributed and constrained systems

In light of this, ARTS (Autonomous Resilient Systems) focuses specifically on distributed and constrained systems, which is a physical or software system that meets potentially antagonistic management objectives defined by users.

  • Distributed: we study systems composed of various elements distributed in space or over different machines. Everything is connected by a network communication infrastructure, which, beyond the transport of data, must now be intelligent, adaptable and secure.
  • Constrained: there are multiple, sometimes contradictory constraints, which are highly dependent on the application context. We are particularly interested in the size of the systems and scaling up, the dynamics (spatial, temporal) and the limited resources (energy, computing).

ARTS fields of action

ARTS will focus on connectivity, security/resilience, analysis/processing and actions.

  • Connectivity:
    • The arrival of 5G will enable the management of communications between machines (M2M), but remains focused on the flow of information from connected objects to the Cloud. The network then remains passive.
ARTS works to secure and optimise these communication networks to make them aware of their environment and enable the communication strategy to adapt to constraints.
  • Data Analysis:
    • Intelligent sensors and objects generate an increasing amount of data in a dynamic and highly distributed environment. ARTS processes the data received, optimises the decision-making chains and plans changes to the system.
  • Actions:
    • From simple sensors to fleets of mobile robots, the systems are very heterogeneous and require software engineering methods for the deployment of context-dependent services.
ARTS works on software solutions for modular and adaptable architectures and high-level development platforms.
  • Security/resilience:
    • Cybersecurity is a significant research issue in the field of distributed environments. ARTS is working on cybersecurity mechanisms that allow these dynamic and heterogeneous systems to manage their protection autonomously, which strengthens their resilience.

Beyond 5G

Beyond 5G

Beyond 5G

The Beyond 5G project primarily aims to provide technical solutions for developing sovereign and secure 5G/post-5G networks. It customises these solutions to the needs of end-user sectors through extensive R&D via an interface between R&D and user needs (experimentation platforms).…
