CAP3R - skills in plastics processing: ‘Recycle, Reduce, Reuse’

CAP3R project brings together six partners with complementary areas of expertise. Its objective is to strengthen support for companies in the polymer and composite industries in their efforts to improve recyclability, recycling processes, and the reintegration of recycled materials. The project also aims to anticipate changes in professional profiles and competencies requirements in these sectors, in response to the transformations driven by the circular economy. Finally, CAP3R seeks to accelerate the deployment of targeted training programmes through the design of educational modules specifically tailored to industrial challenges and emerging skill needs. Beyond training, the consortium’s collective ambition is also to inspire future recruits to embrace a career oriented to reducing the carbon footprint or our industries and to enhance the attractiveness of these sectors.

IMT Nord Europe mobilises the expertise of the Engineering and Educational Resources Division (PIRP) and the Material and Processes Research and Education Centre (CERI MP) to address two major objectives:
  1. To design educational modules for future engineers, aimed at deepening their understanding of current recycling challenges in the polymer and composite fields, teaching existing and emerging valorisation technologies, and thus integrating eco-design principles into engineering education programs.
  2. To enhance the visibility of research activities in the polymer and composite sector dedicated to the development of new valorisation strategies, notably through six doctoral projects, three of which started in 2025:
    • New pedagogical approaches: development of models and tools for designing hybrid-mode practical training sessions, based on recommendation algorithms (adaptive learning) to guide users according to their choices and observations during practical work.
    • Valorisation of thermoset composites in a concrete matrix: study of the incorporation of composite waste (glass fibre-reinforced unsaturated polyester resins) originating from end-of-life products or production scrap, with the aim of developing concrete with reduced environmental impact. The research focuses on the particle size distribution and compatibility between the fibers and the concrete matrix on mechanical and processing properties.
    • Mechanical recycling of structural composites: consideration of the variability of recycled composite material reincorporated into a thermoset matrix in order to highlight the influence of the different recycling process stages on the obtained composite performance.
