Materials & Processes

GENEPI project, Energy micro-generators based on bio-based and piezoelectric materials.

The objective of the GENEPI project is to convert poly(L-Lactide) (PLA), a bio-based thermoplastic material, into a high-performance piezoelectric and ferroelectric material to compete with traditional piezoelectric ceramics and fluorinated polymers with negative environmental impacts. GENEPI is therefore aiming to improve scientific knowledge of PLA shear piezoelectricity, particularly relationships between process, structures and properties. Multiple challenges must be tackled in terms of formulation, transformation and characterization of piezoelectric PLA. IMT Nord Europe’s MP CERI is working more particularly on an extrusion-orientation process to manufacture piezoelectric PLA films, an easily industrializable process. Finally, to assess the potential of these piezoelectric PLA-based technologies, GENEPI is endeavoring to develop devices based on piezoelectric PLA (mechanical sensors, vibratory energy recovery systems, and actuators). Other more innovative proofs of concept are also in development, particularly piezoelectric-effect chemical reactors.
