CERI Energy Environment in the spotlight: an award-winning paper

Runner-Up Outstanding Paper in Environmental Science: Atmospheres of 2023!

“VOC emissions by fresh and old asphalt pavements at service temperatures: impacts on urban air quality”

 J. Lasne, A. Lostier, M. N. Romanias, S. Vassaux, D. Lesueur, V. Gaudion, M. Jamar, R. G. Derwent, S. Dusanter, and T. Salameh.

The paper entitled “VOC emissions by fresh and old asphalt pavements at service temperatures: impacts on urban air quality”, written and supervised by the CERI Energy and Environment team in cooperation with CERI Materials and Processes, was selected by the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Environmental Science: Atmospheres journal as the Runner-up Outstanding Paper for 2023!

Urban air pollution has become a major health and environmental sustainability concern for citizens, society, scientific communities and policy makers. This paper shows that asphalt road-surfacing materials – petroleum-based materials widely found in urban areas – can potentially contribute significantly to volatile organic compound emissions and the formation of secondary organic aerosols, and could become a major source of urban pollution in the future.

This award rewards the team’s efforts and commitment since 2018 and bears witness to the quality of their research and the importance of this emerging theme concerning asphalt emissions and the assessment of their impacts on urban air quality.
